Political Capital of the World

After a weekend of having a wonderful time hosting family members, Jane and I went kayaking in Rehoboth Bay. Upon our return we checked our phones and there were texts from our kids about President Joe Biden deciding not to run for reelection. We turned on CNN to hear more about his decision and it became evident that we are living in the political capital of the world – Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.

While I was riding my bike around town this afternoon, I saw multiple television network tents set up on the second floor balcony of the Rehoboth Beach Public Library, which is directly across from the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center (where Biden spoke last week after the assassination attempt on Trump).

When I rode my bike past Biden’s street, it was blocked off by the Secret Service. Being that the agency has had a rough eight days, I decided against taking a photo of the roadblock.

When Biden is in town, a communications tower is set up in the parking lot at Cape Henlopen State Park which is very close to the Biden house.

Since we moved to Rehoboth Beach last year, we have encountered a few presidential motorcades and state park closures (when Biden decides to go on a bike ride). Not complaining as I feel it is a privilege to share the same ZIP Code (19971) as the President.

Other security precautions that are in place when Biden is in Rehoboth include a Coast Guard boat off the coast and two Coast Guard boats in the Rehoboth-Lewes Canal (thanks Doug for the photos).

Without getting to political, I am very pleased with Biden’s decision not to run for reelection as I think a younger, more energetic candidate will be more appealing and generate increased turnout for the Democrats, thus defeating Trump.

One final thing that happened during my bike ride today; I have been riding a bicycle for approximately 55 years, today for the first time ever, I was stopped by a Rehoboth Beach Bike Cop. I made a right turn on a red light and after riding three additional blocks I hear someone say “pull over on the bicycle”. The cop tells me he was stopping me for making the right on red and that during the season I have to follow automobile rules which include no right on red. I told him I made the turn to avoid the car. He gave me a verbal warning and I was in my way.
